The Rogues Rant

RoguesRantWelcome to The Rogues Rant, an occasional look at all things Rugby.

The Junior Illawarrior Under 13 Squad is heading off on their New Zealand tour this Saturday. They had a big night earlier this week when Wallaby great David Campese came to town and put the boys through their paces at Kiama Showground. After running the boys through some well executed drills, the night was capped off by the great man presenting the players with their Tour Jumpers. The night was a chance for the boys to say thank you to all their very much appreciated sponsors and supporting family members whose fundraising efforts have helped to make the trip possible. It’s sure to be a very enjoyable trip for all the young guys, their Coaching Staff and supporters. Enjoy the trip guys! The Kick n Chase TV crew were on hand the other night so keep an eye out in the coming weeks for a bit of Illawarra Rugby on the Box.

The NSW Super W girls have taken all before them in the new Tournament. After going through the Rounds unbeaten the girls have now earnt the right to host the final against the Queenslanders. The match against the Michael Hayes coached Reds side will be played as a curtain raiser to the Waratahs V Lions match at Allianz Stadium on Friday 20th April. The Women’s match will kick off at 4.45 and will be seen live on Fox Sports as well. The NSW ladies had a big win last week in Melbourne over the Rebels by 57 – 0. That came on the back of wins over the Brumbies 24 – 5, the Force 32 – 10 and the Reds in Round 1 by 18 – 0. They’ll go into the final as raging favorites but I’m sure their assistant coach Sean Barrett won’t allow any complacency in the big game.

The Waratahs will be looking for their fourth straight win this week at home to the Reds. A win will keep the Tahs at the top of the Aussie standings with the Rebels while a loss will allow the Reds to close the gap at the top of the table. It’s the last of the local derbies this week so both sides will be desperate for the points with some tough games coming up. The Brumbies have a hard one against the Highlanders across the ditch, while the Rebels are at home to the Jaguares. My Tips for this week after a perfect round last week: Hurricanes, Blues, Rebels, Highlanders, Waratahs and Sharks.

Well round 1 of the local comp went pretty much as expected last week with the Rogue scoring four out of five. There are some interesting games this week which should help to get a bit more of a line on how things could develop this year. Campbelltown have their second home game in a row against Premiers Avondale. The Wombats will be smarting after last week’s loss to Uni and will be keen to get a win on the board. I think they should be too strong for Quinnies, Avondale to win. Bowral have Shamrocks at home after their strong win first up against Tech Tahs last week. Shamrocks scored two late tries to salvage some respectability in their loss to Vikings in round 1. Bowral should be too good here, Bowral to win. Tech Waratahs have two in a row at home as well, hosting Kiama. The Tahs caused Bowral plenty of trouble last week before falling away late, while Kiama had a close win over Camden. I’ll go for Tech Tahs to get the points here. Vikings are at home to Camden in Wollongong and after a strong outing at Shamrocks should get the better of the Rams. Vikings to win. Match of the Round is down at Shoalhaven Rugby Park with the only round 2 game featuring first round winners matched up. University was very disciplined in their win over Avondale while Shoalhaven had a close three point win at Campbelltown. I’m expecting to see a strong Shoalies side going around this week but I don’t think they can take the points away from the Students going on the Bulls form last week. University to win.
