The Rogues Rant

RoguesRantWelcome to The Rogues Rant, an occasional look at all things Rugby.

I’m not going to criticize the Wallaby players for last week’s Bledisloe Cup match at Homebush. Firstly we must consider that there is no doubt that New Zealand is the number 1Rugby nation in the world. This match was another example of the chasm that has developed between New Zealand and Australian Rugby. The Kiwi players were fitter, stronger, faster, more skillful, and most importantly showed how much better educated they are on how to win football games. For me their ability to handle whatever circumstances they found themselves in throughout the match was the main difference between the sides. The manner in which they adjusted in both attack and defense right across the field was outstanding. On the other hand the Aussies looked like schoolboys in comparison. After the Super Rugby season this was yet another painful example of how Australian Rugby has lost its way in terms of Coaching and Development of players at this level. The current group of Australian players have been let down by the inefficient administration that has overseen the decline of Australian Rugby over the last fifteen years. Where to now?

One round to go before the semi’s and barring any major upsets things are all set to go for the Finals. The Bowral V University match will decide who will play Avondale in the Major Semi on Saturday week at a venue to be confirmed. Vikings should win against Campbelltown and cement their place in the Minor Semi against either the Blacks or Bulls on Sunday week. If Vikings were to fall to the Quinnies then a Shamrocks win over Tech would give fourth to the Rocks. Avondale are home to Kiama and the score here could be anything. Avondale to win well. Camden and Shoalhaven meet at Camden in a match with no bearing on the finals. It’s a big trip for Shoalhaven, one which they never look forward to, but I think they will still get the points from the Rams. Shoalhaven to win. Vikings have Campbelltown at home on Vikings Oval and should get the points they need to secure a Minor Semi berth. Vikings to win. Tech Waratahs and Shamrocks are at Saunders Oval and Shamrocks must finish this match with a win and a bonus point for them to be any chance of grabbing a semi spot. Tech played with plenty of structure against Vikings last week but lacked the punch in attack for the most part. Shamrocks will be dead keen to finish their run as best they can and should win here, but I’m not sure there will be much of a margin in the Rocks favor. Shamrocks to Win. Match of the Round is at Eridge Park for the Bowral V University game. The winner gets the spot in the Major Semi while the loser will have to settle for the Minor Semi, simple as that. I reckon less than a converted try will divide the teams at the end of eighty minutes in what will be a close one. Bowral have a seventy point advantage in for and against so a draw will get Bowral through to the main Semi. The Bulls must win if they want two bites at the Grand Final cherry. For mine Bowral will get the points here and go on to meet the defending premiers on Saturday week. Bowral to win.
