Season 2018 On The Way

illawarrarugbylogoIt’s the end of January already with the 2018 Season fast approaching. The Macarthur International Tens will get things underway for Illawarra Rugby in just over three weeks time on Saturday 17th February at Camden Rugby Park.

A week later what is now one of the major events in Australian Rugby the Kiama Sevens is on as usual at Kiama Showground on the last Saturday in February. A full card of entries has been received for the Tournament which is now recognised a real stepping stone for players striving for higher Sevens representation with all the scouts heading down the coast for the big day.

Super Rugby starts also on the 17th February when the South African Conference kicks off. The Australian group are away from Round 2 a week later. There will be plenty of interest when The Rebels meet the Reds in Melbourne on Friday 23rd to get the Aussie group underway. The Sunwolves host the Brumbies in Tokyo on the afternoon of Saturday 24th, and later that night the Waratahs open their season at home in Sydney against the Stormers.

The Illawarriors have a big day of Rugby set down for Campbelltown Showground on Saturday 24th March when they will host Southern Districts for Trial matches in preparation for this year’s Caldwell Cup tournament in April. The Illawarriors will play Souths in Seniors and Colts with Harlequins, Wollongong Uni and Wollondilly sharing matches with the Southern Sydney clubs lower grade sides. It should be a big day of entertaining rugby for the progressive Harlequins to host.

There will be heaps of trial matches happening soon around the District as clubs prepare for Round 1 of The Builders Club Premiership kicking off on Saturday 7th April. It will be an 18 Round Competition with all the traditional IDRU Clubs entering three teams for the first time in many years. Vincentia, the Southern Crushers and Wollondilly will all be returning for Third Grade as well this year making a total 13 teams entered for the Thirds title. This means there will be some disruption to the Third Grade Draw to cater for the extra sides but it is a welcome sign for Illawarra Rugby to see all the traditional clubs with Third Grade sides once again. The final Draw should be available by Friday February 2nd with Grand Final day set for early September.
