Rep Rugby Creates Results

Camden are off to great start to season 2013 following their 4 try, 26-0 victory over Tech Waratahs at Camden on Saturday. With Illawarriors and likely Cockatoos Captain Gavin Holder producing yet another Man of the Match performance and Fly-Half Ben Greentree adding much stability and guidance, the Rams now find themselves at the top of the table. With all other Round 2 matches washed out, their win creates a situation where all other clubs now have someone to chase. After showing plenty of promise in 2012 the Rams will be very happy with the start to their season.

Camden now head off to Ocean Park next week for the Match of the Day against Shamrocks. Lets hope the weather holds off this week for what should be a bumper game.

Its clear to see the benefit of the early Illawarriors program with the rep players getting off to a flying start for their clubs. This is no better evident than at Camden with Holder, Greentree and players like Mark Knightingale and Lee Russell firing.

This weeks footnote. The Illawarriors Program over the last 2 years saw us finish 2nd to Newcastle Hunter. Hunter have won the last 6 Caldwell Cup Country Championships with Illawarra being the runner up 3 times in that period. It's interesting to compare our 2 Zones.

Hunter have 19 clubs competing with 63 Teams. Their Premier Division consists of 1st,2nd,3rd Grade and Colts and has 10 clubs. A and B Grade has 7 Teams each and C Grade has 9 Teams.

Here in the Illawarra we have 11 clubs with 34 Teams. So you can see that we are little more than half the size of Newcastle Hunter. The population of their zone is about twice that of ours. So we can be proud of our performance against the Newcastle Hunter zone.

But we should also be very wary of responsibility to do all we can to grow Rugby in our zone especially in the growth areas to the south of Wollongong. We must work to find ways to create growth to improve the future of Illawarra Rugby.
