COUNTRY RUGBY EYES ON TAMWORTH

NSW Country LogoTamworth will become the centre of attention for the NSW Country Rugby Union fraternity this weekend when the city hosts the NRMA NSW Country Rugby Union Championships. Ken Chillingworth Oval and Scully Park No 1 will be the venues on 23 & 24 March when the cream of NSW Country Rugby Union Senior and Colts Zone teams come together to do battle for the Country Championship silverware.

Illawarrior U20 Colts Squad Announced for NSW Country Championships

colts wingerThe Illawarrior U20 Colts Squad to contest the 2013 NSW Country Championships was announced today with 22 players selected to travel to Tamworth next weekend.

The Colts are in the second tier competition of the championships and will square off against New England next Saturday 23 March.

Success in that match will see them contest the Colts Plate Final the following day in an attempt to win their section of the tournament and return Illawarra to the top tier of colts competition in 2014.

Illawarriors Squad Announced for NSW Country Championships

senior tackleThe Illawarriors Senior Squad to contest the 2013 NSW Country Championships was announced today with 24 players selected to travel to Tamworth next weekend.

The selected squad is the result of an intense 3 month training program and two recent trials against Canberra Wests and Penrith.

In naming the squad to contest the championships, Head Coach Brendon Schoupp was quietly confident that the team could go all the way and bring the Caldwell Cup back to the Illawarra.

Illawarriors U20s pass Final Trial

colts tryOn the 9th March 2013 the Illawarriors U20s played their final trial of the representative program against Penrith Rugby Union Club at Nepean Rugby Oval.

A big and determined Penrith side had taken the field to ensure the Illawarriors where in for a physical game.

Warm weather and a sunny day was on the cards, a strong platform by the forwards, quick line defence and expansive running rugby were the game plan.

Tight Affair against Penrith for Senior Illawarriors

 senior 8The Senior Illawarriors travelled to Penrith on Saturday for their second and final warm up game before the NSW Country Championships later in April. The game was played in four 15 min quarters, with the first two against the Penrith 2nd Grade side. Illawarra started the first quarter slowly and conceded an early try, but managed to get the trip out of their system finishing the opening two quarters strongly 21-17 on top. Penrith then ran out a fresh 1st grade side out for the last two quarters and won a tight affair 22- 17.

Illawarrior Colts too good for Canberra Wests

2013 2 March 2 Illawarriors V Canberra West U20. Rhys PetersOn Saturday the Illawarriors Under 20’s travelled to Shoalhaven Rugby Park for the first trial of 2013 campaign, against Canberra West Rugby Union Club. The field was in great condition considering the recent weather and light showers that continued throughout the day.

The first quarter of the game was of a good quality with both teams finding there combinations and quickly trying to gel together to capitalise on any opportunities. This resulted in a closely fought out quarter with both forward packs trying to assert their patterns of play and set piece work. The quarter finished with no points scored.
