Coach Fean Reports for 2015

Let me start this report by congratulating Ed Baillieu, Bailey Lamb and Tom Sutherland on being selected for the NSW Country Squad. Ed was also recognised with the NSW Country U16's Encouragement Award.

Illawarra U16's won the Shield at the NSW State Champs and were placed 7th at the Country Champs.

We based ourselves at St Gregory's College in Campbelltown with 25 players and a support team of 4: Tom Honeysett (assistant coach), Ron Cotton (Manager), Andrew Cracknell (Chef) and Paul Frean (head coach). We bused the team into Concord daily, the facilities and plans worked very well with the boys having enough sleep, plenty of food and good recovery sessions with the pool.

Day one of the Country Champs were challenging and we went down to Hunter and Mid North Coast. Both these teams went on to contest the final.

Day two we found our rhythm after some soul searching the night before and posted a solid win against Central North 17-7. This gave us 7th place in the Country Champs. We felt we had let ourselves down and were determined to do better in the State Champs.

Round one was against West Harbour, in an excellent game of rugby the Illawarra were declared the winners after a 12 all draw due to the fact that we had scored the first try.

We then went on to play Eastwood. Eastwood were dominant in the tackle area and we struggled to build pressure with phase play. Eastwood went on to win and we were placed to play Central North in the Shield Final the next day.

Central North forfeited the game and Illawarra were declared the winners.

The most pleasing aspects of the 3 days were that the boys improved dramatically over the 3 days. I put this down to an attitude adjustment after the first day and merely being able to play some 15 man rugby consistently.  In addition, the camaraderie within the group developed to high levels by day 3 and I am certain many life-long friendships will have been forged through the experience.

I would like to thank Tom Honeysett, Ron and Tina Cotton, Julia Frean, Andrew and Megan Cracknell and all the parents who supported the team in the build up to and over the tournament. In addition, thanks to the Illawarra Rugby Union for the financial support in getting uniforms onto the boys.

All the best to you all for the remainder of 2015 and beyond.

Paul Frean
